Kevin Arthur Biography

The Pipemaker

 My Photo
I've been a pipe smoker on and off for the past 36 years and purchased my first pipe in a little smoke shop in Hjorring Denmark at the age of 17. It was during my last hiatus from smoking that I somehow misplaced that pipe and that's how my journey into pipemaking began. The pipe was a Stanwell known back then as a "Captains" pipe and after searching for months for a suitable replacement I came up empty. I decided to make a duplicate of that pipe and ordered several undrilled briar blocks and preformed stems from a notable American carver and got to work with the simple tools I had available. The first attempt turned out fairly close to the original but my second attempt was a success. Even more importantly, I fell in love with the entire process of pipemaking and it seemed to fill a creative gap that was lacking in my life. Having close to two years of pipemaking under my belt I decided to attend the 2009 Chicago Pipe Show as an exhibitor and was amazed at the response to my pipes. As I continue to perfect my craft, my goal is to provide mid and high grade pipes at an affordable price.
Every pipe that I craft consists of the finest components available to me including plateaux briar from the Mediterranean region and exotic decorative materials from around the globe. I use cast Acrylic and Polyesters from the USA as my stem material of choice for their lasting beauty and ease of care.

Each pipe that I craft has the following features: An open airway of 5/32" from bowl to stem. All stems are "Easy Draw" in that the airway tapers from 5/32" to 5/64" and are funneled at the button. The stem thickness at the button is 4mm +/- and comfortable. I use Delrin tenons exclusively on all pipes. Most bowls are coated to provide a finished look to the pipe and for easy break in.
